Lumpiang Shanghai

Lumpiang Shanghai is a Chinese-influenced Filipino delicacy. Also known as Spring Rolls, the Lumpiang Shanghai is also popular in Indonesia,Vietnam and the Netherlands where its name is spelled "loempia", an old Indonesian term that the Dutch eventually adopted and used to refer to "spring rolls". It was brought by the Chinese immigrants from the Chinese province of Fujian.

This recipe has become so popular among Filipinos that the number 1 fastfood chain in the country even included it in their value meals -- and you know I'm referring to Jollibee, right?

When my mother and I were in Savemore Market near Meycauayan tollgate (our favorite hangout just because it's near our house), I suddenly had a craving for lumpiang shangai so I asked my mom if we could have it for dinner. We bought the lumpiang shanghai ingredients that we thought we needed...

  • Lumpia wrapper (priced at around 19 Php for 40 pieces - this is the BONUS brand)
  • Carrots
  • Ground pork
  • Cheese
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Eggs
  • Flour / baking powder

Our Lumpiang Shangai recipe is quite simple. We actually just followed our tastebuds or how we remembered spring rolls taste like.

Procedures:
  • Mix the ground pork with minced carrots, onions, garlic and cheese. The cheese will make the filling much creamier.
  • Add flour (we just estimated how much to put).

  • When thoroughly mixed, wrap portions of the mixture with spring roll wrappers.

  • Fry the lumpia until golden brown.
  • Enjoy them while still warm and crispy and dip with a sweet and sour sauce or a Del Monte Banana Ketchup (because it's the sweet one of all the Del Monte Ketchup variants).
We had left-over mixtures because we only bought 2 sets of 40-piece lumpia wrappers and we bought 2 kilos of ground pork! So we just fried the rest for breakfast for 3 more days. I suggested that we turn them into sweet and sour meatballs but then we were too sleepy and busy in the morning to be more creative!

We had this Lumpiang Shanghai recipe as one of our daily meals and merienda for 4 days (there were 4 of us at home). Of course we had to alternate meals with vegetable recipes or else we'd grow tired of it.

We had a delicious spring roll recipe for less than P200.00 (that's including the cooking oil that we used for another week) and gave our Ilocano cuisine an exciting twist.

I'm looking forward to having spring rolls at home again, and this time we'll probably add more veggies and buy more spring roll wrappers.
