Pichi Pichi: Filipino Snack Recipe

Last month, my Aunt visited us at home and while we were chatting over lunch (or merienda, i can't remember), she mentioned that she knew how to make Pichi pichi!

You see, Pichi-pichi is one of my favorite Filipino snacks because they're really delectable. A store here in Bulacan named "Tetok's" sells well-made Pichi pichi as well as palabok and barbecue. Because that store has really delicious pichi-pichi, their product became my standard.

When my Aunt taught us the Pichi-pichi Filipino recipe, I was pleasantly surprised how Tetok's product and my Aunt's pichi tasted the same! It was really a delightful experience watching her make one of my favorite Filipino desserts and tasting how good they are.

Let me share a few things about how my Aunt did it.

Pichi pichi Filipino Recipe
INGREDIENTS:

  • Grinded Kamoteng Kahoy (Grated Cassava)
  • Lihiya (2 tablespoons)
  • Pandan flavor
  • Niyog or Coconut
  • Cheese
  • Sugar
  • Milk called "Klim"
First, she squeezed the juice out of the grated kamoteng kahoy (cassava). With that juice, we only used the white part that settled at the bottom of the bowl. Beware though that this may take a while. The liquid part that did not settle we threw out. My Aunt mixed all the ingredients (except the coconut, that's for later) - the grated cassava and everything, as well as the white liquid that was extracted from the juice that was extracted from the cassava. Complicated, I know!

Then we apportioned them on small plastic containers. These plastic molds are what we use for making our homemade Puto.

We bought these molds from Ever Gotesco Grand Central Mall in Monumento, Caloocan City. Unfortunately, that mall is now closed after a fire broke out. You can also use other molds, as long as they are made of a material that can stand extreme heat.

After placing the mixture in molds, it's time for you to place them in the steamer!

Now, COOK (steam) for 40 to 45 minutes or until the mixture becomes translucent. Like this.

It has started to look more like the real thing! Now look closely as we add Coconut.

Look at that transformation! From nudity to coconut goodness. Now that's how we roll! -- the pichi I mean.

And then that's it! You can now enjoy this Pinoy Snack and merienda, then probably serve it to your guests and boast around.  You can even tease those who are asking for the Pichi pichi Filipino recipe from you and tell them it's a secret! But of course they'd probably figure it out themselves since there are many pichi-pichi recipes published in different Pinoy food blogs!

Good luck and enjoy the pichi pichi girls! :D
